Getting LOST all over again!

It's sort of a shame that Lost ended before I started this blog, because I'm one of those fans who used to rush to the computer right after every episode and commiserate online with the rest of the obsessed, picking apart every detail of every episode and searching the 'net for hidden clues and references.  Lost ranks right next to The X Files and Twin Peaks as one of my favorite shoes of all time – clearly I love the weird mindbender shows.

So when those last few minutes of Lost were over and I knew that my weekly fixation was no more, I was a little bummed.  I enjoyed the ending and all, but I'll miss having that crazy, confusing show to mull over every week.

But now I can put off my withdrawal just a little bit longer, thanks to Lost: The Complete Collection on DVD.

This set is SO. COOL.  I've had it for a week now and every time I play around with it I still find new neat little things.  Even without the actual DVDs (which are themselves packed with fun bonus features) it's worth hours of entertainment.

First off, the DVDs include all six seasons as well as each season's individual bonus features.  And the packaging is much nicer than that of the previous DVDs:  the discs are easier to remove and replace, and the design of the disc jackets and accompanying episode guide are gorgeous.

But that's not even the fun part.  The fun part is everything else!  If you don't want to know about easter eggs and hidden clues and such, stop reading here.  But if you do, follow me after the jump:

The whole set comes packaged in a giant box with a silhouette of an airplane set against a "memorial" list of names of pretty much every character ever on the Island whose name we knew.  Even Frogurt is on there!  Then once you open that you get to the really cool box – the one shaped like the base of a pyramid with symbols on each side:  the cast in silhouette, the Dharma Initiative station logos, the hieroglyphs from the countdown clock in the Swan Hatch, and silhouettes of the Tawaret statue, the Temple, the Lighthouse, and the Black Rock.  When you open that box you'll see a map of the Island on the inside of the lid.  Since no "official" map of the Island existed before now, this in and of itself is pretty cool.  But then you get to the toys inside...

The set comes with a Senet board just like the one Jacob and the Man in Black played with as well as the game pieces to use with it.  There's also a small model of the ankh Jacob gave to Hurley, a page torn out of the journal of one of the sailors on the Black Rock, and a Dharma-branded black light.

And if you run the blacklight over the map of the Island, you'll see the donkey wheel from beneath what would become the Orchid station.  You'll also see that the glyphs at the corners light up a bit.  If you twist the map so that the glyphs line up with their matches and the two ankhs line up, you can pull off the map to reveal a disc of bonus material.  It took me a while to find that without cheating.

Run the blacklight over the piece of cardboard separating the toys from the actual DVDs and you'll see the map that Radzinzky and Kelvin drew on the Swan station's blast doors.  Run it over the disc booklets and you'll see little shout-outs to each season as well as the Candidates' names as written inside Jacob's cave.  There's probably more that I haven't found yet.

Open the little model ankh and you'll find a rolled-up note containing arrows:  a cheat code for a hidden feature on the bonus disc that teaches you about the history of Senet and how to play.

Bonus features include bloopers, deleted scenes (including deleted scenes from previous seasons not included on the previous DVD sets), a feature on the music of Lost, a featurette on the "flash sideways" device from the final season, and bunches more.  Click around on each disc for fun little easter eggs hidden in the menus, like a special thank you to the fans from Damon Lindelof and clips of the cast fooling around on set.

And then when you're done playing with all the toys, you can re-watch all six seasons and relive all the insanity, humor, drama, and confusion that kept people like me hooked!

The Lost team is really a team that knows their audience.  After six seasons of obsessing and searching for hidden clues and reading obscure books and trying to learn quantum physics, they've given us a DVD set that feeds into the obsession they bred with all sorts of fun hidden clues and surprises.  Fans probably would have been happy with just a box set, but this is so much more.  It's almost the entire Lost fan experience perfectly wrapped up in one awesome package.  If you're a fan like I am and love the show for it's questions and mysteries, this set is definitely worth having.
